The 5 Biggest Mistakes New Brow Artists Make (and How To Avoid Them) :
Many new brow salon owners focus on perfecting their craft but can easily overlook key mistakes that can slow down their success or catch up to them very quickly in their business. Avoid these common mistakes to build a thriving business —
1- NOT SETTING UP YOUR BUSINESS CORRECTLY
Operating without proper business set up registration can be detrimental to your business. Including registration of ABN, ASIC, Insurance, or registering for GST if earning go over $75K. Yep! I know - this is the stuff they don’t teach you in school. This can lead to legal issues, fines, or even financial loss if something goes wrong.
How to avoid this mistake:
✔️ Register for an ABN (if you’re located within Australia)
✔️ Get public liability and professional indemnity insurance (we recommend Sparrow Insurance)
✔️ Track income expenses for tax time and find a great accountant - using platforms such as Xero and keeping your receipts help with tracking
If you’re feeling overwhelmed with the start up of your business and are seeking solid foundations, structure and guide. We provide a full business starter checklist with our business coaching options. See coaching options here
2- SKIPPING PROPER TRAINING (FOCUSING ON SHORT TERM NOT LONG TERM RESULTS)
Clients these days are looking for that point of difference in a service and in where they’re choosing to spend their money. If you’re lacking in service or technique skills that they know they can get elsewhere, then that’s exactly what they will do - get it elsewhere. This then prevents rebooking rates which results in quiet days, weeks and months and relying on new clients to fill your days. This isn’t consistent. Be that stand out point of difference with confidence, structure and high quality service that your clients won’t forget.
How to avoid this mistake:
✔️ Invest in certified or industry recognised courses to ensure you are up to industry standard level, techniques and infection control health and safety measures
✔️ Choose the right course that covers all the basics, and more.
✔️ Practise makes perfect - build your new skill confidence before offering services to paying clients
3- EASY BOOKING SYSTEMS IN PLACE
Believe me when I say, most people/potential clients in 2025 do not want to call you to book an appointment. People love flexibility, option to book in at whatever time and most importantly an easy, seamless process to do this. Harder the task = more chance they will click right out of it and call it a day.
How to avoid this mistake:
✔️ Look into different booking system options for minimum spending per month, easy features, easy to book. We love Fresha or Acuity
✔️ Avoid not having a website. Websites build trust and are an extension of your brand. Also helps with SEO visibility and clients to discover you.
4- NEGLECTING OR RUSHING A CLIENT CONSULTATION
Just like going to the hairdresser, or any service specialist you can almost always guarantee that a consultation or some sort of thorough discussion will be provided to make sure you and the professional are on the same page. This builds trust, rapport and showing you will take the time to want to understand your clients needs and goals, and most important seeing if they are suitable for the service they have booked in for.
How to avoid this mistake:
✔️ Have an easy consultation system in place eg; Jotform, pre printed consultation forms, Fresha and other additional booking sites also have inbuilt pre requisite consultation forms which are very helpful for clients booking in and for you to pre discover their medical history, skincare or goals prior to chatting with them.
✔️ Having a two step process of consultations - one online pre requisite and then in person to ensure you have covered and double checked everything you need to know before moving forward with the service.
In depth consultation guidance and questions are provided in our online trainings here .
5- CHEAPING OUT ON YOUR PRODUCTS AND QUALITY OF SERVICE
When you price your services you want to make sure you’re pricing them based off, expertise, overheads, product expenses and more. When a client comes to you they will see and feel the quality of the product. You would never check into a 5 star hotel and see cheap shampoo or conditioner in the shower. Have consistency through your quality throughout every area of your business and clients will see that too.
